Disclaimer:
I am not a writer beyond little doodles here and there. I enjoy ridiculous drama and play it out in my little shorts. I am very shy of sharing my stories, but am doing so here to get things started. I like feedback, but only polite constructive feedback and I think that should be the rule of thumb here when reading and commenting on others stories. All that being said enjoy this little blurb on Nima which ICly is ONLY known to the individuals mentioned directly in this story.
Nima could feel her voice filling the room as she hit that last long note of her song, letting it trail off and quietly fade. Past the bright lights shining on her face she could see the collection of spacers, spicers, and general dregs of smuggling society gathered around rough wooden tables facing the stage. As she flashed a grin curtsying to the crowd, a chorus of hoots and whistles pierced through the cantina sounds of loud chatter and clinking glasses.
After a final smile to the crowd, she slipped backstage and grabbed a towel to wipe the sweat from her face. She glanced in the small mirror hanging on the wall, looking over her shapely form and adjusting her top. Her reflection gave her a bemused smile. "What is it about my red skin that drives them wild," she thought. She shrugged carelessly and adjusted her lekku wrap. She stepped through the side door then took the back steps to the main floor and threaded her way through the tables towards the back of the cantina. Nima smiled and gracefully swayed her hips, skirting just out of reach of some of the more enthusiastic patrons as they reached out rough hands to grab at her. Reaching the bar she smiled at the young zabraki girl behind the bar, perched atop one of the stools and let out a little sigh.
"Hey, Losh," she said addressing the bartender, "can I get a Sunburn and Sev's regular? And make sure you get her the good stuff this time."
"Yeah well, tell the Boss to not drink it so fast if she wants it to last," came the muttered response.
Nima turned to glance around the bar as Losh smirked and turned to fill the order. The Gear Box was not a fancy cantina by any stretch of the imagination. The furniture was mismatched with enough scars to rival those of the clientele seated on it. It was the kind of place you never wanted to see with the lights all the way on for fear of seeing what the place was really like. As it was, dimly lit with the soft red glow emitting from the stage and dancer cages lining the sides, it had a gritty charm that appealed to Nima. She turned to pick up the drinks Losh had set on the bar then slipped off the bar stool.
"Thanks, Love. Make sure those barves don't stiff you on tips. Wink a little," teased Nima as she flashed a smile. The bartender smiled back, shaking her head amusedly and began wiping down the bar top with a dingy rag.
Staying close to the back of the bar to avoid eager hands, Nima slipped into the last booth in the back letting her eyes adjust to the dimmer light.
The dark figure seated back in the curved seat of the booth spoke with a smooth even drawl. "Tha' was a nice set tonigh', Red."
Nima tilted her head graciously then slipped into the booth setting down the tall whiskey in front of the other woman.
"Thank you, Sev. I always aim to please."
Nima looked the zabraki over and not for the first time thought that she was happy to be on the woman's good side. Severina was a tall with a muscular build and casualness about her that belied the danger lying just beneath the surface. Sev flicked her eyes over the cantina then focused on the petite lethan next to her, picking up her whiskey.
"Are the girls clear on the set order? I don' wan' Sash and Bril gettin' into it again on the main floor." Sev sneered a little. "Although I know the men like it. Don' like them haulin' tha' gunsos out here."
Nima grinned a little taking a sip from her drink. "It's all set, Sev. No screaming nunas on the floor tonight."
Sev reached over and tugged playfully at the dark purple ribbons encircling NIma's dark red lekku. "Is this the one I got for ya?"
Nima smiled at the zabrak and shook her head fixing Sev with a coy look. "I have so many admirers, Sev. They shower me with gifts."
Sev laughed and tugged at the ribbons again. "You is a sharp lil' thing, Nima!" Severina caressed Nima's tchin gently. "It looks nice on you. Next time I make a run off wold I 'll pick ya up another."
Nima giggled, taking another pull at her drink. "You spoil me too much, Sev, and I might get fancy ideas." Sev snorted a little taking a drink of her whiskey.
"You know I don' entertain any ideas that you'll stop lovin' that barve ya got under your skin just for me."
Nima shook her head frowning, but then smiled softly.
Sev lifted an arm so Nima could lean against her and she draped her arm carelessly over the lethan's shoulders. The two watched the rest of the night's entertainments together in the booth with interruptions only for minor cantina business and new drinks.
Losh wandered by the booth to pick up their glasses as the last patrons were staggering out the door.
"Tha' it, Boss?"
Sev pushed her empty glass towards the bartender. "Yah, Losh. Close everythin' out and you can take off."
The young zabraki bartender nodded as she cleared away the glasses then sauntered back to the bar. Sev rubbed her hand over Nima's shoulder then let her hand slide down to the small of her back.
"You all set, Red?"
Nima peeked over her shoulder and nodded. "Lemme just go make a run though the back. Make sure Sash and Bril aren't scratching each other's eyes out." Nima grinned and slipped out of the booth winking.
"Hurry up, pateesa. I'll walk yah home." Sev leaned back in the booth, propping her feet up on the table and rested her hand on the pistol holstered at her thigh.
Nima smiled again before turning to walk through the empty cantina to the dressing rooms backstage. She rolled her neck gently as she walked trying to work out the kinks knotting up in her muscles. She peeked into the first dressing room and found it empty. She searched the other three and finding them empty as well figured the girls had decided to call it quits on their feud and head home.
"Smart girls for once," she mumbled under her breath. Nima shook her head and walked to the side door.
She stuck her head out the door making sure none of the girls had decided to rendezvous with any of the clientele outside to make heated deals about further interactions. Sev didn't mind if the girls decided to entertain on their own time, but it had to be away from the cantina. Nima was just about to close the door when she heard something in the distance. She was peering out into the dark trying to pinpoint the sound when she heard the slight whine of a blaster energy cell being charged.
Nima froze in place barely shifting her eyes to her left to follow the sound. There was a scruffy looking man wearing a duster that covered up a poorly mismatched suit of armor. He was pointing the blaster at Nima's chest and a satisfied sneer curled his lips.
"Nice an' easy, Red." He motioned with the blaster for her to step away from the door. "Don' try and do anythin' stupid. No runnin' and no screamin'." His eyes followed her like a hungry sand panther as she slowly stepped outside.
Nima shivered involuntarily as the night air hit her skin. Her mouth went dry and her stomach twisted itself into knots.
"What do you want?" whispered Nima.
He looked her up and down grinning. "Ain' it obvious, Red?"
Her chest felt tight and she instinctively wrapped her arms around herself covering as much as possible. He snorted a laugh watching her reaction.
"Nah, Red. I won' damage the goods like that. I'll let the highest bidder do tha'. "
The realization of what he was saying dawned on her face and she glanced nervously out into the night, desperately searching for any figure to call out to.
The man chuckled and it was guttural sound. "Nobody's comin', love. So stop lookin'"
Nima couldn't fight back the tears as he pressed her against the wall of the cantina and started to pin her arms behind her.
* * * * *
Sev had leaned her head back against the seat and closed her eyes. She cocked one eye open to see Losh coming from the back of the cantina carrying a few glasses.
"Hey, what is taking Nima so long back there with those two nunas?" Sev closed her eyes again.
Losh stopped and furrowed her brow. "Nima ain' back there, Boss."
Sev snapped her eyes open fixing the bartender with an icy glare and her voice got dangerously quiet.
"Are you sure?" Sev had sat up and was leaning forward still glaring at the zabrak.
Losh took a step back and cringed slightly. "I was just back there, Boss, cleanin' up and Nima ain' there."
Sev launched herself over the table and pulled her blaster from her hip in one motion.
"Call Kairn and get the security detail. Get him to check on all the girls." Sev shouted over her shoulder to Losh who dropped the glasses and pulled out her comm.
Severina crept down the hall backstage letting her eyes adjust to the dark. She paused listening holding her pistol over her left shoulder. Sev traced her right hand along the wall as she quietly made her way to the stage side door. She leaned her head close to door listening. She could hear the muffled sounds of a man's voice and Nima's quiet weeping.
Sev hissed under her breath and took off running for the front of the cantina. She stopped at the front entrance pressing her back against the wall peeking out quickly to see that it was clear. Not spotting anyone she slipped outside, running along the opposite side of the cantina to where Nima was being held. When she reached the back of the cantina Sev slowed her pace stepping over the sand quietly. The wall of cantina was cold against her back. She poked her head around the corner, only for a moment, but it was long enough to make her stomach tighten. Nima was pinned up against the wall and the sounds of her crying drifted down to Sev. The man was pulling out a set of restraints and hooking them onto the lethan's wrists. Severina took a breath and clenched her jaw before bursting around the corner aiming her pistol at his head.
"I would step away from her if I were you," she said in a loud, smooth voice. The man startled, spotted Sev, and immediately snatched Nima away from the wall, hooking his elbow around her neck. Sev's eyes caught a small gleam and saw he had a knife pressed against the side of the twi'lek's slender neck. Nima gasped and stiffened. Her tear stained face was full of fear and she locked her eyes on Sev's. Severina looked into Nima's eyes and then flicked her gaze back to the man letting out a growl through gritted teeth.
"I said get ya hands off her!" Sev took a couple of steps forward still aiming her blaster at his head with a steady arm.
The man grinned and pulled his prisoner closer to him while pressing the knife against her neck, eliciting a gasp from Nima. "Uh uh. If you come any closer I will scar up this pretty neck. Then she will only be good enough for the lowest bidder...and you know what kind of men those are." He grinned wider peering over Nima's shoulder at Sev.
Sev gave Nima a slight shake of her head then lowered her blaster slowly then slipped it back into her holster. Nima's eyes followed the blaster's descent then looked at Sev's face with wide pleading eyes. Sev ignored the lethan's gaze with a clenched jaw then gave the man a knowing smile.
"Alrigh', alrigh'. I know how these things work. If I let ya go I want a cut." The man paused a moment thinking then smirked at Sev.
"You can have fifteen percent of what this little slua grabs on the market." He adjusted his grip on the knife at Nima's neck. Fresh tears ran down her cheeks as she stared at Severina. The zabrak saw the look fear in Nima's eyes and swallowed away the bile rising in her throat at what she was doing.
Sev nodded and forced a grin. "Tha' sounds reasonable." Nima stared at Sev in disbelief looking utterly betrayed. The man relaxed his hold on Nima slightly giving her a little more freedom of movement. Sev watched them both gauging Nima's reaction.
"Ah'll give ya my comm and we can work out the details ya?" Sev grinned digging into her back pocket for a data chip brushing her finger tips against the hilt of her vibroblade. The man nodded still sneering as he watched Sev carefully.
Nima felt his hand loosen on her shoulder and seeing Sev semi distracted she twisted her body turning away from him in an attempt to break loose.
What happened next was so fast. In a heartbeat Sev had pulled the blade from its sheath behind her back and lunged her body forward throwing the knife towards the man. It hit him in the right shoulder pulling him down to the ground where he let out a grunt and writhed in pain. Nima screamed as she collided into the wall having pushed past his arm. Severina ran forward unholstering her blaster. She stood over him fixing him with an icy stare.
"Paj nerate! I don' stan' for your kind." WIth a calm face she aimed her blaster at his head and fired. Stepping over the lifeless body she moved quickly to Nima who was struggling with her restraints trying to push herself against the wall to get to stranding.
"Don't touch me! " Nima screamed desperately trying distance herself from the zabrak.
Sev grabbed Nima's shoulders turning her hard to get at the restraints. As soon as they were unclipped, Nima swung around around with her open hand headed towards Sev's face. Her arm was easily deflected and Sev grabbed a hold of the lethan's wrist.
"Nima! Nima!" Sev yelled at the lethan shaking her shoulders slightly. Nima hung her head unresponsively swaying a little in Sev's hold. "Nima, look at me!" Nima shook her head refusing. Severina grabbed her chin and lifted it so she could focus on her eyes. Her voice was low and quiet. "Look at him. Look at what I did to him because he tried to take you from me. And that will happen to every barve who tries it."
Nima turned her head slowly towards the body in the sand. She gasped involuntarily and wretched slightly. His face was completely blown away leaving a bloody mess. She looked back at Sev with wide frightened eyes.
"I will never let this happen again, patessa. Never." Sev's voice was a whisper and her eyes burned with a deep intensity. Nima winced and grabbed at neck, pulling her hand away she saw the dark glistening of red on her hand.
"Gunsos!" Hissed Sev as she turned Nima's head gently to reveal a long slice along the twi'lek's neck. It wasn't deep, but was still bleeding profusely. "He must have got you when he was goin' down. Gunsos!!" Sev pressed her hand to the wound and scooped her other arm around Nima's waist to support her.
The color from Nima's face bled away and she swayed on her feet. "Don't leave me alone, Sev," she whispered. Severina caught Nima's little body in her arms as she fainted. Sev scooped her up and carried her easily towards the cantina.
The security detail ran up to Sev ready to report, but she started yelling and swearing at them before the could utter a word. They all moved away from the motionless body slowly bleeding into the dry sand.
